Initial Consultation

Also known as an intake interview, the initial consultation is a one hour initial meeting. Mandatory for new clients, the initial consultation provides you and the therapist a chance to meet one another and determine if the two of you are a good treatment match, or if another of the therapists on staff might be more ideal for your individual circumstances. During this meeting, the therapist will ask you about your life background, as well as the issue(s) that bring you to therapy. Basic goals for the treatment process will be considered within the context of both short- and long-term treatment options. Taking into account all of these factors, as well as the client's financial resources, a regular meeting schedule for standard sessions will be discussed. To schedule your initial consultation, or to ask a question, contact Dallas Psychotherapy Center. We will do our very best to match you with the therapist most appropriate for your individual treatment goals, resources, etc. If, for whatever reason, you feel that you do not "click" with the therapist during the initial consultation, you may request that you continue work with another of our specialists.

In some cases, the initial consultation may also consist of a psychiatric evaluation, which involves symptom diagnosis and a discussion of possible medications. The client may follow-up with Dr. Brad Musser for a general health screen.

Standard Session

Following an initial consultation, the client will begin meeting with the therapist on a regular basis. Most typically, these sessions are scheduled once weekly for 50 minutes. Other meeting schedules are also common, from several times weekly to once every two weeks. Depending on the client's needs and treatment goals, he or she may be referred to Dr. Brad Musser for medication prescription and/or management when appropriate. Dallas Psychotherapy Center emphasizes customized, individual treatment carefully suited to the unique needs, wants and goals of the individual client, couple or family.

Scheduling Policy

  • 24 hours notice is required to cancel or reschedule any session. There are no exceptions to this policy. Failure to provide adequate cancellation or rescheduling notice for any reason whatsoever, will result in the client being charged in full for the missed session.

  • If the client arrives late to any session for any reason whatsoever, he or she is choosing to forfeit that amount of time from the scheduled session. Even if a client arrives 40 minutes late to a 45 minute session, he or she will be charged in full for that abbreviated session. There are no exceptions to this policy.

  • Payment in full is expected at the time of the session. (This includes the initial consultation). Cash, check or credit is accepted. If you are working with insurance, your full co-payment is expected at the time of the session.

Insurance Policy

Regardless of your insurance carrier, Dallas Psychotherapy Center will file insurance claims for you. Please note, however, we have chosen (for reasons detailed below) to do so as an out-of-network provider. (For medication management and general health screening, Dr. Brad Musser is available as an in-network provider for all major insurance plans). In some cases, this reimbursement rate is lower than that for in-network benefits, but for other individuals benefits are equal to those for in-network providers. You can discuss these details with your therapist in session or on the phone.

You should be aware that there are certain potential risks associated with filing mental health insurance claims. When filing a claim, the therapist must submit a formal diagnosis. This diagnosis then becomes part of your permanent medical record. This often results in the insurance company labeling the consumer with a "pre-existing condition." For example, if your therapist submits a diagnosis of "depression," this pre-existing condition can later raise your life insurance premiums or make it difficult to obtain health insurance.

In addition, some clients are concerned that the filing process often requires a breach of client confidentiality, especially for in-network reimbursement. To meet the requirements for in-network reimbursement, the psychologist must submit an official client diagnosis and an ongoing progress report, detailed treatment plan, etc. This process requires that the therapist divulge significant personal information about the client and his or her therapy work. In addition to being added to your medical record, this information is evaluated by your insurance carrier's case manager. A case manager typically has no psychological training, and makes decisions about your approved treatment based on financial rather than mental health concerns.

Given the above considerations, many established therapists (including Dallas Psychotherapy Center) choose not to become in-network providers. In some instances, however, our therapists are able to work with the client to arrange a reduced fee, provided he or she meets certain requirements. Contact us if you have unanswered questions about fee or the insurance filing process.
