ABOUT DALLAS PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTER

Most individuals have learned to settle. They identify their job as a "necessary evil," a "way to make ends meet," rather than a passionate, creative expression of self. They learn to accept this because this is just the way things are. And when it comes to relationships, most individuals experience a similar "inevitable" disappointment. They "know" that romance, excitement and sexual energy fade over time in a committed relationship. As such, it is best to not ask for too much from our partners, our jobs, our lives.

At Dallas Psychotherapy Center we see things differently. We believe it is your birthright to become happy, successful and profoundly satisfied within any and all areas of your life. The question is not Is it Possible? but Are you ready?

James and Heather Robbins are happily married, and have been together for twenty years. They live the lives that they inspire their clients to reach for.

"Their shared interests in music, reading, philosophy and spirituality drew them together, but time has underscored their differences. James is more logical and intellectual; Heather is more intuitive and emotional, they say. They believe their differences help make them a good team."  The Dallas Morning News

In May of 2004, The Dallas Morning News featured James and Heather Robbins in an article titled "Zen and the Art of Evolving Relationships." This article described the uniquely complimentary nature of the Robbins' Dallas, Texas psychology work, balanced by their individual personality strengths, life experiences and therapeutic approaches. More individual information on James, Heather and their staff therapists is found below. In partnership with Brad Musser, MD, Dallas Psychotherapy Center offers affordable, integrative medication evaluation and management.

She is consistently clear, concise, and practical in her message, her heartfelt empathy and compassion all the while shining through." —Laura Beard, M.D., Dallas psychiatrist

"Heather captures a certain warmth and real-ness when speaking about personal growth and relationship issues. Dr. Heather Robbins is a licensed clinical psychologist and media personality. As a sex therapist in Dallas, she is a regular, expert source for local and national publications, including Cosmopolitan magazine and The Dallas Morning News. Her academic work has been published in many prestigious trade journals such as Anesthesia & Analgesia and The Clinical Journal of Pain. Heather's warm, engaging personality and down-to-earth advice make her a popular radio interview guest. She has appeared on numerous radio programs across the country, including nationwide coverage by San Francisco's KCBS, The Russ Martin Show (Texas' most popular afternoon talk show),The Ankarlo Morning Show and Good Day Dallas Fox4.

Dr. Heather Robbins received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Texas’ Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She is originally from Austin, Texas, where she spent her undergraduate years studying psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. After completing her undergraduate psychology degree with honors in only two years, Dr. Robbins lived abroad in France, Greece and Japan before beginning her graduate studies at UTSW. In addition to her graduate coursework, Heather completed internships at Terrell State Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management and other local institutions. After earning her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, Heather completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Dallas Group Analytic Practice.

Among her many areas of ongoing study and practice, Dr. Robbins specializes in both psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Psychodynamic therapy examines the personality in depth, with a focus on how interpersonal patterns learned in the past may limit the individual's present life experience. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) uses systematic, goal-oriented techniques to restructure the client’s unwanted habits of thinking, feeling and doing. Dr. Robbins has received extensive training in CBT, having been previously supervised by Dr. Monica Basco, author of Never Good Enough (as seen on Oprah), and a respected leader in the field. Heather regularly works with clients struggling with a broad range of emotional difficulties in Dallas: ADHD, depression, anxiety, obsessions/compulsions, panic attacks, a variety of phobias and sexual issues. She offers both couples counseling and individual psychotherapy for adults, adolescents and seniors.

James Robbins, M.A., LPC-I

James Robbins, M.A.

Praise for Robbins' book, Build A Better Buddha:

“This book creates a new benchmark in East-West Psychology. . . . Robbins embeds a rich and powerful set of practical, meditative exercises that he has adapted for Western usage within an exceedingly comprehensive presentation of Buddhist and Western psychological traditions.” —Peter Fenner, author of The Edge of Certainty

Describing the path to his own self-discovery and spiritual understanding and drawing upon an encyclopedic knowledge of the eternal wisdom expressed by ancient and modern prophets and philosophers, James Robbins takes the reader on a journey of enlightenment that is amazingly compelling. He writes in a friendly style with engaging anecdotes and offers the stressed 21st-century reader a practical guide for the recovery of inner peace and a resolution of that primeval perplexity that is experienced by human beings as the enigma of the self. Robbins seems to me to speak with his soul.” —Zulfikar Ghose, author of The Triple Mirror of the Self

James Robbins holds two graduate degrees, a Master's degree in English literature from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master's degree in professional counseling from Amberton University in Dallas. James is a published author, national lecturer and professional counselor. His first book of non-fiction, Build A Better Buddha, was published in 2003 by Nicolas-Hays, Inc. In 2004, Tony Robbins, world-renowned peak performance coach, personally selected this book as motivational reading for his elite, international group of Platinum Partnership clients. Better Buddha examines a cross-section of East and West, integrating aspects of Western psychology with Eastern philosophy. Although James regularly speaks and writes about various philosophical and spiritual belief systems from around the world, his therapy practice is not formally affiliated with any particular beliefs other than those of traditional Western psychotherapy.

James has appeared in radio, print and television media in Texas, California and Washington. Within these popular formats, he offers his innovative, plain-language views on a variety of topics, such as stress-reduction, relationships and sexuality, overcoming depression, anger and other conflicted moods, and strategies for better realizing career and health-related goals. James has offered workshops, locally and nationally, addressing these same issues in both intimate and lecture-hall settings. Throughout his public work, James has had the opportunity to interact with a number of individuals from a wide range of ethnic, economic and cultural backgrounds, and continues to refine his warm, personalized approach of "meeting the client where the client is."

In addition to offering therapy and counseling, James has over three years of experience as a life coach and meditation teacher. When appropriate, James incorporates these aspects of his work into treatment, utilizing meditation techniques to alleviate depression and anxiety, as well as helping clients maximize vocational, health and other personal goals by increasing focus, concentration and clarity. James specializes in couples counseling, sex therapy and helping individuals work through relationship issues. He also offers general individual treatment for adults and adolescents. Like Heather Robbins, James believes that conflicted family relationships are often at the heart of many day-to-day struggles.

Staff Therapists

Studies have shown that clients feel most helped in treatment based upon who the therapist is, rather than his or her theoretical background, academic achievements and so on. Clients want therapists that have achieved success and satisfaction in their own lives. They want a therapist that will speak to them simply and forthrightly, communicating from genuine wisdom and direct experience rather than mere "book learning."

James and Heather Robbins carefully choose staff therapists from the thousands of mental health professionals in the DFW area. Although each of our clinicians attended a highly regarded psychology or counseling graduate programs, our therapists are hand-selected, first and foremost, for their personalities, their feel as a real person, rather than university test scores, grades and other such arbitrary accolades. The Robbins have personally selected and intensively trained a group of staff therapists with expertise in depression, anxiety, fitness, relationship issues, career issues and other common areas for treatment goals. The staff meets regularly as a whole, to discuss various clients and client issues, and to examine an ever growing palette of therapy methods and techniques. In these weekly meetings, James and Heather help shape the individual treatment, lending their unique expertise and clinical vantage points.

Contact us to schedule an initial consultation. To the best of our ability, you will be matched to the most suitable therapist for this initial meeting. After examining your treatment goals and background in more depth, you and the therapist may agree that you would be a better match for another staff therapist, or one of the clinic directors.
